In 1982 Porsche introduced a new car to LeMans and was the dominant force, locking out the podium with three 956s.
The all-time favorite racing duo Jacky Ickx and Derek Bell made it two-in-a-row themselves, piloting the No1 956 to victory in what was a relatively straightforward affair for Porsche and was the Belgian driver’s final Le Mans triumph.
Jochen Mass and Vern Schuppan finished in second with Hurley Haywood, Al Holbert and Jürgen Barth, who had to replace Haywoods partway through due to the American becoming unwell, securing a 1-2-3 show of dominance.
The 956 went on to take another three-straight Le Mans victories before the introduction of the 962…
Johans 6th edition of The Whale Tail Project, the ROTHMANS, is the first to be signed by a race driver and it is none other than six-time LeMans winner Jacky Ickx.
The racing legend himself owns piece number 1/11 of the series and signed the remaining 10 Whale Tails for our collectors.
On our last US tour we had the honor to meet Derek Bell, too and spend a lovely lunch listening to the greatest stories of his memorable racing career.
We are grateful to be able to share our love for Porsche and the brand’s legendary racing history with the duo that helped write it.
