The idea behind the “Carrera” Whale Tail was to capture the essence of both brands-
Design, craft, technical innovation and history.
By naming the Tail after Tag Heuer and Porsche's most memorable watch, the "Heuer Carrera," Johans Lamic pays tribute to Jack Heuer, the fourth-generation leader of the company, who designed the eponymous auto-racing-inspired chronograph in 1963.
A sports watch that captured the romance and danger of racing and went on to become an international icon.
Tag Heuer’s Carrera watch was named after the Panamericana, the gruelling 2,000-plus mile road race across Mexico that ran from 1950 to 1954.
For this reason, Johans decided to stay true to the Tag colors of green, white and red, which remind him of the Mexican flag.
In 1972, Porsche unveiled its own Carrera, the legendary RS, named for its most powerful engine – the 911 Carrera.
But the history does not end here.
To create the artwork, Johans Lamic used an original Turbo spoiler to commemorate Hans Metzger's success story. Back in the mid 80s Mezger was responsible for the Porsche-made TAG Turbo engine, which won multiple championships in Formula One in the McLaren MP4/2 chassis.
The Carrera Tail's nameplate was modeled on the design of the TAG Heuer Vintage dashboard rally timer's backplate.
Measuring 140x62 mm, it has the same dimensions as its historical counterpart. Made of brushed aluminum, drilled with 4 holes and hand engraved in Germany, it is a real gem.
Every little detail of the art piece was handmade, nothing off the shelf and took eight weeks to be created.
Johans wanted to make sure that the piece looked as organic and fluid as possible, just as fluid as time passes.
Lamic created custom made inlays mimicking the winder of the Carrera X Porsche, TAG released in 2021. The inserts of the inlays are hand-painted in red, just like it’s designed at the watch.
They are bored with extreme precision from a single piece of metal. As smoothly as the pistons slide into the combustion chambers, so do the custom-made rods slide into their unique inlays.
Both Porsche and TAG Heuer can rightfully point to the heritage of the Carrera Panamericana. Some of the details of the watch are reminiscent of the texture of a racetrack, and so Johans chose a base of black granite to incorporate that very heritage into his work of art.
The one-of-a-kind art piece comes with a traditional Certificate of Authenticity, housed in a hand-stitched, German-made leather pouche, modeled after the tool bags that came with every classic Porsche.
Borrowing from Tag Heuer's ever-innovative thoughts, this unique work of art comes with a digital certificate of authenticity based on blockchain as well.
An emotional bridge between past and present.
