» THE STORY THE STORY – The Whale Tail

When did you fall in love with Porsche?

The story of the Whale Tail Project started in 2019 when Johans bought his first Porsche, an ’84 3,2 Carrera Targa. Johans has always been a petrol head, and when the decision was made to buy a classic car, a Porsche 911 was the obvious choice: a classic shape, a reliable flat six and pure air cooled engine. The idea was to restore and customize the vehicle.

When the process started, the car got totally disassembled and among all these parts, Johans noticed the spoiler. He couldn’t help but notice its striking beauty and realized that it would be a tremendous waste to dispose of such an exquisite object. An idea began to form in his mind, envisioning how perfectly it could fit as a centerpiece in his living room.

Driven by his passion for the Porsche, its rich history, and cutting-edge technology, Johans decided to embark on a creative journey. He saw an opportunity to develop an exceptional object that would capture the quintessence of the brand and serve as a symbol of its legacy. The Whale Tail was carefully transported to Johans’ residence, where he dedicated himself to bringing his vision to life.

With meticulous attention to detail and a deep appreciation for craftsmanship, he embarked on the task of transforming the spoiler into a masterpiece that would embody the essence of the Porsche heritage. Throughout the creative process, Johans fused his artistic vision with the spirit of Porsche, weaving together elements of history, technology, and automotive artistry.

The result was a truly unique object that stands as a testament to the ingenuity, passion, and elegance that defines the iconic shape of a 911. By salvaging the spoiler and transforming it into an extraordinary piece for his living room, Johans not only created a captivating work of art but also breathed new life into an iconic component of a remarkable automobile. This story exemplifies the power of creativity, inspiration, and the profound connection between art and automotive culture.

The iconic Whale Tail was first introduced on the 75’ 930 turbo, a legendary car for a whole generation due to the first addition of a turbo to the engine, the specific wider look and driving characteristics due to the turbo lag and oversteering. The turbochargers used in the Porsche 930 Turbo were derived directly from the 917/10 and 917/30 monster prototypes from the landmark CanAm era as well as Group 6 936 and later 934 and 935 Group 5 racers as seen at the world’s most important sports car races such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The idea behind the Whale Tail Project is to revive the emotions, nostalgia and the glorious racing past of the Porsche brand by displaying on our stylish revisited spoilers retro and modern interpretations of iconic racing liveries.
